"Heartbreaker" is a single by Dolly Parton. It was released on July 24, 1978, by RCA Records as the first single from her album of the same name. It was written by David Wolfert and Carol Bayer Sager and produced by Gary Klein with Dolly. It was originally recorded by Randy Gurley and released as a single in 1977. Dolly's version peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, becoming her ninth song to top the chart. It also peaked at number 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. "Heartbreaker" was reissued in 1984 in the Netherlands to promote the release of the 1983 European compilation, The Love Album.

Recording
"Heartbreaker" was recorded on March 7, 1978, at Sound Labs Studio in Los Angeles, California, while "Sure Thing" was recorded on March 9.

Critical reception
The single was reviewed in the August 5, 1978 issue of Billboard magazine. The review said, "Tasty piano work surrounds Parton's crystal clear vocals as she opens this popish ballad that will again bring her to the attention of programmers across the board. Acoustic and electric guitars and strings enter at timely points continuously building the song to a strong climactic ending."
Cashbox also reviewed the single in their August 5, 1978 issue. It said, "This single, previously released by Randy Burley on ABC, should be another pop vehicle for Dolly, yet not offend country admirers. DJ copies pressed in red vinyl will attract a lot of attention."

Commercial performance
"Heartbreaker" debuted at number 38 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart dated August 19, 1978. It peaked at number one on the chart dated September 30, its seventh week on the chart, and remained there for two additional weeks. The single charted for 13 weeks. It also reached number 12 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and number 37 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also peaked at number one on the Cashbox Country Singles chart and number 56 on the Cashbox Top 100 chart. In Canada, the song peaked at number one on both the RPM Country Singles chart and the RPM Adult Contemporary chart, as well as peaking at number 41 on the RPM Top Singles chart. "Heartbreaker" was also successful outside North America, peaking at number 20 in the Netherlands and number 34 in Belgium.
