The Parton Family Sings "In the Garden" is an album by Avie Lee Parton and her daughters, Willadeene, Cassie, and Stella. It was released in May 1968 by Inspiration Records. Original copies of the LP appear on eBay from time to time and sells for $300 or more. The album was made available for digital download and streaming on December 20, 2024.
Stella wrote about the album on her website in 2008. She said, "This is a very special recording because my mother and two sisters, Willadeene and Cassie, are singing on it. This is the authentic sound of our family harmony blend. If you want to hear how we sounded in church, this is it. We sang at churches, funerals and local functions as I was growing up. Usually I sang lead, not because I was the best singer, but I had the most nerve in public. |
"This album was recorded at the old Starday studios with studio musicians in Nashville. I remember the most significant event of the experience was Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. being shot the night we were recording. We were in shock when we heard it on the radio on the drive home from the studio.
"A lady by the name of Marion R. Mangrum who owned a newspaper in Maryville, Tennessee produced it. She had heard us sing at an event and felt we should have a recorded album released to radio."
Songwriting credits below are adapted from online research and ASCAP listings. Some of the credits listed on the LP labels are inaccurate. Additionally, Avie Lee and Willadeene's names are misspelled on the back cover as "Avielee/Avielle and Willadeen."

Stella (And the Gospel Carrolls) is the debut solo studio album by Stella Parton. It was released in September 1972 by Inspiration Records. The Gospel Carrolls are Stella's brother Randy and cousins Dale and Dwight Puckett. The album was produced by Stella's uncle Louis Owens and features backing vocals by uncle Bill Owens and sister Dolly.
Stella wrote about the album on her website in 2008 saying, "This was the first solo recording of my career. I was working mostly gospel music events, such as churches, "all night singings," and Christian radio and television shows. The group consisted of my sister, Cassie singing harmony, Bobby Cox, singing and playing piano and bass player and singer, Clayton Head. "This album was recorded on a cold winter day. My Uncle Louis produced. My Uncle Bill and sister Dolly dropped by and sang harmony on a couple of songs. "Ragged Angel" and "Try Him You'll Like Him" were released as singles and made the gospel music charts." |

A Few Words from Dolly Parton About Her Sister, Stella:
Stella and I are sisters from a family of twelve children and we grew up where singing is as natural as just being there. We grew up singing gospel songs in the little country church that our granddaddy, Brother Jake Owens, pastored. We did a lot of singing in different churches around our mountain home area in Sevier County, Tennessee. Almost all of our family sings
and plays some kind of musical instrument. Stella was always a very religious girl and most all of her activities were centered around church and the religious side of life. She was always very devoted and never cared about singing any kind of music except gospel music. She is a very sensitive and deep person and her singing reveals her warmth, sincerity, and honesty. I always described her voice as "heart singing"...it just comes out as a real honest way of putting to music the way a person would tell you something honestly. I have always believed that she was born to spread the word of God in songs. Some people are born for different reasons and all things are for a purpose and I truly believe that working for God in this manner is her purpose. Some of the songs in this album were written by Stella. She is also a very good writer. The songs she writes have meaning and depth. I'm sure that you will especially like the songs written by her as I do. I am also very pleased and honored that she included two of my songs, "Ragged Angel" and "A Better Place to Live". I hope that you will like them. I'm very proud of Stella and I hope that you will accept her and help her in her work which is truly for the Glory of God.
With Love,
Dolly Parton

It was my first effort at trying to produce a new project and attempting to secure a new recording contract after recording four successful albums for Elektra Records from 1976–1979. I was especially proud of the fact that I recorded it with my touring band at the time. Unfortunately, it never was released on a major label; however, I sold it as a road album for a long time. Milan Williams of the Commodores produced it. He and I collaborated on a few of the songs. It was recorded at Hitsville-Motown Studios. This was the longest I have ever worked on a project. We had some good songs, great pickers and Steve Messer engineered and helped me produce. We had a lot of fun and high expectations of getting my recording career back on track. |

Commentary by Stella
Stella wrote on her website about each song from the album when it was released in 2001. Her comments on each song are below.
"Up in the Holler"
When I visited my mama and daddy up in my native Smoky Mountains, I suddenly saw my mother's shift in age to an elderly woman, which was bittersweet. I played this song for my dad five weeks before he died and he just cried and cried. To touch your parents in such a way was the ultimate. It has a mournful tone. This is one of the sweetest songs I have ever sung, enveloping the loving part of my relationship with my parents and not the struggles.
"Child of My Body"
I wrote this for my only child, Tim, when he moved away from home into his very first apartment. For the first time I was overcome with the realization that I was a guest in his home. When he got up for work, I felt lost and watched him doing things the way I taught him, the little rituals. Even though he was on his own, he will always be a part of me. He is still in my heart and will always be my baby. This song started as a poem and then became a five-minute composition and ended as this Appalachian lullaby.
"Lover's Dream"
This song was used as the concept for the photos on the CD cover...waking up being in love, being carefree and picking flowers. This song has more of a bluegrass feel, which is why I wanted to include the Scruggs family. It was written and recorded twenty years ago with Bob Teague, but never released.
"Wayfaring Stranger"
Everyone has always done this song as a dirge, which is too slow. I wanted to do it in a medium tempo and wanted the texture to sound like my mom and be something that will always sound good on stage. I like the groove.
"The Missing Part"
Paul Overstreet and I used to write together a lot. In fact, he was married to one of my sisters and I got him his first publishing deal. When I was looking for songs, I ran across this again and it seemed to fit. Paul is able to say so much in songs through sweet, tender messages. I had done the demo for him years ago. There are great harmony lines on the choruses. Don Schlitz also co-wrote this song with Paul.
"I'll Think About Shadows"
This one I wrote about letting bad things and negative thoughts keep us from our joy. The shadows are the negative thoughts. Instead we need to look at the bad circumstances and say, "What can I learn from this," and then embrace it instead of being defensive.
"I Draw from the Well"
This is the most gospel-sounding song on the album and was inspired by Ronnie Reno's CD, Drawing from the Well. I believe we should draw from the well of God's living family. This song has a more Cherokee Indian melody.
"One Honest Love"
Wayne Carson wrote this song and brought it to me. He said it reminded him of me and I was honored that he would let me do a demo of one of his songs. He is such a brilliant writer and musician. This is one of the sweetest songs I have ever heard. It allows me to use the tender part of my spirit to interpret the song.
"Songbird's Heart"
This song was also done with the Scruggs family and was written about a relationship I once had. His initial attraction to my music and my freedom of expression turned into jealousy that he couldn't deal with. It broke my heart. "If you squeeze a bird, you'll kill it." Bob Teague helped me with the bridge.
"Satisfied Mind"
I worked this arrangement out on guitar. The message of the song is the importance of knowing that if I died today I would know I had done my best. That I had been loyal, truthful and fair. It is through this reflective mindset that I try to interpret and express this song.
