"When Possession Gets Too Strong" by Louis Owens and Dolly was released as the sixth single from Smoky Mountain DNA: Family, Faith and Fables on September 30, 2024, by Owepar Records. Louis is Dolly's uncle, the brother of her mother Avie Lee Parton. Dolly and Louis co-wrote the song together in the late 1960s and Dolly previously recorded it for her 1970 album, The Fairest of the All. The track was produced by Louis' son, Richie Owens. Since Louis passed away in 2014, the song was created using an archival vocal performance by Louis recorded in 1993 at Mountain Star Studios in Sevierville. New vocals from Dolly and instrumentation were recorded in 2023 at Historic Fireside Studios in Nashville to complete the track. It was the first of several recordings of this nature to be released from the album. The single was a surprise release with no announcement prior to the release date.
