"Daddy Was an Old Time Preacher Man" is a single by Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton. It was released on June 29, 1970, by RCA Victor as the only single from Porter and Dolly's sixth collaborative studio album, Once More. The song was written by Dolly with her aunt Dorothy Jo Hope and produced by Bob Ferguson. It peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. The single was nominated ​for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group at the 13th Annual Grammy Awards.

Background

"Daddy Was an Old Time Preacher Man" was written by Dolly and her aunt Dorothy Jo Hope, about Rev. Jake Owens, Dolly's grandfather and Dorothy Jo's father, who was a pentecostal preacher. Dolly has said that in his later years, Rev. Jake was so proud of that song that he would walk up to people and say, "You know that song "Daddy Was an Old Time Preacher Man"? That's about me!"

Recording

Both sides of the single were recorded on April 21, 1970, at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee.

Critical reception

Billboard reviewed the single in the July 11, 1970 issue. The review said, "The winning duo will go right to there to the top once again with this infectious rhythm item. Powerful follow up to their "Tomorrow Is Forever" top ten winner."

The review in the July 11, 1970 issue of Cashbox said, "Certain to be a top chart waiting for Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton's latest. Have lots of copies around."

Commercial performance

"Daddy Was an Old Time Preacher Man" debuted at number 48 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart dated August 1, 1970. It peaked at number seven on the chart dated September 12, its seventh week on the chart. It charted for 15 weeks. It also peaked at number seven on the Cashbox Country Singles chart. The single peaked at number 12 in Canada on the RPM Country Singles chart.

Accolades

"Daddy Was an Old Time Preacher Man" received a nomination for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group at the 13th Annual Grammy Awards in 1971. The single also received the Country Award at the 1971 BMI Awards and a Songwriter Achievement Award from the Nashville Songwriters Association International in 1971.
