"Don't Call It Love" was recorded on October 31, 1984, at Rumbo Recorders in Los Angeles, California. "We Got Too Much" was recorded at the same studio on an unknown date.
Two alternate versions of the song have been released. The first omits the saxophone from the instrumental break and was released on the 45 single sent to radio stations. The second version was released in 1995 on the I Will Always Love You: The Essential Dolly Parton One compilation album and the 2000 compilation, Legendary Dolly Parton. This second version omits the backing vocals. The saxophone during the instrumental break is included, while the saxophone from 2:35 on the album version is omitted, with no saxophone coming in until the 2:50 mark.

"Don't Call It Love" debuted at number 67 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart dated January 26, 1985. It peaked at number three on the chart dated May 4, its fifteenth week on the chart. The single charted for 22 weeks. It also peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. The single peaked at number five in Canada on the RPM Country Singles chart and number 15 on the RPM Adult Contemporary chart.
