Critical reception

The single was reviewed in the November 20, 1982 issue of Billboard magazine. The review said, "The first single from The Winning Hand LP pairs vocals by two of country music's most distinctive styling and the result must be considered among their best performances. Nelson handles Parton's lyrics as if he'd written them himself, and her singing is equally graceful."

The following week, Cashbox reviewed the single in their November 27, 1982 issue. It said, "The first act played from the Winning Hand album, this tune is, despite its title, not a cover of the Ray Stevens record, but a track of Parton that has been drawn from the vaults of Monument. Stations may need to shuffle their playlists around to make room for this song, a strong folk ballad that finds Dolly and Willie combled on vinyl for the first time."
