Critical reception
The single was reviewed in the March 15, 1982 issue of Billboard magazine. The review said, "The dreams of the starry-eyed hopefuls who trek annually into Hollywood to become their dream's epitome is sensitively limned by Parton. She's apparently turned her film career into another wellspring for her songwriting, adding a new dimension for her lyrics, while overseeing production as well."
Cashbox reviewed the single two weeks later in there March 29, 1982 issue. it said, "Dolly continues her slick country approach, incorporating sparse horn inflectionsand a gritty, '50s-style sax on the title cut from her latest album. Trains have been a traditional favorite topic of country songs, but Parton adds a new twist In leaving town over a broken heart in an "expressive" rendition."
