Critical reception

The single was reviewed in the October 8, 1977 issue of Billboard magazine. The review said, "Parton's sweet, innocent little girl vocals are highly effective on this Mann and Weil song with its strong mid-tempo melody. A soft guitar break and sweet strings highlight the instrumental backing. Of course this is also pick material in the country field."

Cashbox also reviewed the single in their October 8, 1977 issue. It said, "In her most pop-oriented performance on record, Dolly Parton proves that her talents as a vocal dramatist are unmarred by the slight shift in style. Produced by Gary Klein (who scored a recent success with Barbra Streisand), this single retains her personal touch while exhibiting the commercial potential to pick up major top 40 and MOR airplay."
