"Holding on to Nothin'" is a single by Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton. It was released on March 11, 1968, by RCA Victor as the first single from their second collaborative studio album, Just the Two of Us. It was written by Jerry Chestnut and produced by Bob Ferguson. The single peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

Recording

"Holding on to Nothin'" was recorded on January 31, 1968, at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee. The B-side, "Just Between You and Me" was recorded on October 10, 1967, during Porter and Dolly's first recording session. It had previously been released as the title track of their first album together in January 1968.

Critical reception

The single was reviewed by Billboard in the March 23, 1968 issue. The review described the track as a "top rhythm ballad performance" and a "potent sales item."

Cashbox also reviewed the single in their March 23, 1968 issue. Their review said that "Holding on to Nothin'" should easily match the sales of Porter and Dolly's previous single.

Commercial performance

"Holding on to Nothin'" debuted at number 60 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart dated April 13, 1968. It peaked at number seven on the chart dated June 1, its seventh week on the chart. It charted for 16 weeks. It also peaked at number seven on the Cashbox Country Singles chart. The single peaked at number 17 in Canada on the RPM Country Singles chart.
