The single was reviewed in the February 20, 1988 issue of Billboard magazine. The review said, "Unlikely pairing has the elements to turn the tables and finally reintroduce Dolly to a pop audience."
Cashbox reviewed the single in their February 13, 1988 issue. It said, "You can forget how great a singer Dolly can be – but here she sings her heart out with Smokey by her side. This is a sophisticated tune for them to trade vocal lines. The track is lushly produced and very accessible. The song is taken from her Columbia album, Rainbow, and has the unmistakable feel of a hit. Should do well across a wide variety of radio formats."
