Cashbox reviewed the single in the June 9, 1973 issue. The review said, "Here's a release that won't miss – traditional country sounds and sentiments from a duo who've been proven chartbusters. This is one of their best, and that says a lot."

"If Teardrops Were Pennies" debuted at number 73 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart dated June 23, 1973. It peaked at number three on the chart dated September 1, its eleventh week on the chart. The single charted for 17 weeks. It also peaked at number three on the Cashbox Country Singles chart. The single peaked at number five in Canada on the RPM Country Singles chart.
