Critical reception
Cashbox reviewed the single in their January 20, 1968 issue. The review said, "Dolly Parton has run across the chart field with three Monument decks in a row, and is now at the starting gate with her fourth on the same label, this one called "I'm Not Worth the Tears". The self-penned ballad has the earmarks of being another good-sized money-maker for the pretty gal."
Billboard did not formally review the single, but included it in the Chart Spotlights section of the January 20, 1967 issue, predicting it would appear on the Hot Country Songs chart.
