Background
Dolly made her first professional recording in March 1959 for Goldband Records when she was just 13. The resulting single, "Puppy Love", did not chart, but received local radio airplay and was reviewed by national music and entertainment magazines Billboard and Cashbox. Dolly and her uncle Bill Owens had been traveling back and forth to Nashville for several years. On one of these trips they met Buddy Killen. He signed them to a songwriting deal with his Tree Publishing Company in September 1961. Bill and Dolly self-released the single "So Little I Wanted, So Little I Got" shortly after on Bill's Circle-B Records. Buddy Killen helped 16-year-old Dolly secure a one single deal with Mercury Records in January 1962. Due to her high pitched voice, they decided Dolly might find success as a pop novelty singer. Dolly recorded the self-composed teen pop song "It's Sure Gonna Hurt" and it was released in August 1962. The single didn't go anywhere and Killen told Dolly to go back home and finish school.
Recording
The single was recorded on February 25, 1962, at Bradley Recording Studio in Nashville, Tennessee. Two additional songs were recorded that day, "Nobody But You" and "I Wasted My Tears". The former was released in 2009 on the 4-disc box set, Dolly, while the latter was possibly a trial recording and destroyed. It is not in the Mercury vaults. Dolly later re-recorded "I Wasted My Tears" for Monument Records. It appeared as the B-side of her first Monument single "What Do You Think About Lovin'" in 1964 and on her debut album, Hello, I'm Dolly, in 1967.
