Background
Dolly has said several times through the years that this song was inspired by her own personal experiences. Not long after she and Carl had gotten married, he asked her if she had ever been with a man before him. She didn't want to lie, so she said that she had. Carl was hurt by her response, but they eventually made up. During the time following the conversation, Dolly said Carl made her feel like an outcast, so she wrote this song.
