"Just Someone I Used to Know" was recorded on April 21, 1969, at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee, during a session for Porter and Dolly's previous album, Always, Always. "My Hands Are Tied" was recorded on April 23, 1969, and was included on Always, Always.

The single was reviewed by Billboard in the October 11, 1969 issue. The review said, "The duo comes up with another top ballad performance that will take them right to the top again."

"Just Someone I Used to Know" debuted at number 62 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart dated October 25, 1969. It peaked at number five on the chart dated December 13, its eighth week on the chart. The single charted for 16 weeks. It also peaked at number three on the Cashbox Country Singles chart. The single peaked at number 20 in Canada on the RPM Country Singles chart.
