Critical reception

The single was reviewed in the May 23, 1987 issue of Billboard magazine. The review said, "Ronstadt takes the lead in this melancholy list of male failings; a tad lengthy but should find plenty of open ears at radio."

Cashbox also reviewed the single in their May 23, 1987 issue. It said, "The Trio" is back again. Three great voices blending well to bring us an easy going country song. The melodic composition, written by Linda Thompson and Betsy Cook, is well-suited for the ladies. How can someone "scold" the listener so gently? The very mellow bass sound, combined with light strings, makes this a soothing arrangement. George Massenburg gives the production perfect highlights and an outstanding mix. Dolly, Linda, and Emmylou have captured our hearts once again."
