The song was written by Alan O'Bryant and produced by George Massenburg. It was first recorded by Bill and James Monroe in 1950. The single peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

Critical reception
The single was reviewed in the September 12, 1987 issue of Billboard magazine. The review said, "Bejeweled by buoyant dobro and staccato fiddle touches and centered by Parton's high lead, song recreates the magic from which the original bluegrass music was spun."

"Those Memories of You" debuted at number 56 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart dated September 26, 1987. It peaked at number five on the chart dated December 12, its twelfth week on the chart. The single charted for 22 weeks. The song also peaked at number seven on the Cashbox Country Singles chart. It peaked at number one in Canada on the RPM Country Singles chart.
