"Together Always" was recorded on May 1, 1972, at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee. The B-side, "Love's All Over", was recorded on April 7, 1971, during a session for Porter and Dolly's 1971 album, The Right Combination • Burning the Midnight Oil.

Critical reception
The single was review in the August 12, 1972 issue of Cashbox. The review read, "When Porter and Dolly sing about being together, they mean it. They are together as people and as artists–their enduring musical relationship makes this single a joy, a probable super-hit."

Commercial performance
"Together Always" debuted at number 50 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart dated September 2, 1972. It peaked at number 14 on the chart dated November 4 and charted for 13 weeks. It also peaked at number eight on the Cashbox Country Singles chart.
