Critical reception

Billboard reviewed the single in the February 15, 1969 issue. The review noted that the Waylon Jennings version of the song was currently doing well on the chart and that Porter and Dolly's duet version should have "equal sales potential."

The single was also reviewed by Cashbox in their February 15, 1969, issue. The described the cover of a current country hit "an unusual circumstance or an early revival" of Waylon Jennings hit. They praised the cover, saying that Porter and Dolly do "a real nice job and that the tune still has plenty of milage left."
